This was a day one of a double. I can honestly say that I’m not obsessed because I only entered the single!
The route was slightly amended from previous Enigma marathons due to flooding, the half lap was reduced, but the 7 full laps of Caldecotte Lake were slightly lengthened. Wind was 15mph south-westerly so difficult on the exposed banks, but it was dry and sunny and had warmed up to a balmy 9°C. I decided to wear an MP3 player for the first time this year, but the batteries ran out half way, and a miss-count of my laps meant I took my penultimate lap too easy thinking I had two to go. However, the drinks and refreshments you can leave yourself at the water stop mean nothing to carry, so nutrition planning works very well on this event. For psychology, I told myself for 6 laps that there were no lions (apparently the subconscious holds the body back in case lions appear!). On the last lap, I told myself the lions were coming… Bloody hell, did I fly round on that lap!
My time: a blistering (for me) PB of 4:44:27, bettering my previous best by 42seconds!
